SELIEN CU

Energy storage control unit

Local control

  • The disadvantage of solar PV systems with backwatt protection is that they can only produce energy that is immediately consumed, if there is no direct consumption the system will back-regulate itself, the fluctuating consumption curve can further reduce the efficiency of PV production, thus the self-consumption factor is low. Our control system monitors the local conditions and charges the energy produced by the PV system into a battery, thus achieving continuous, efficient renewable generation and increasing the self-consumption factor.

  • The controlled coordination of the components of the internal electricity system (PV system, battery energy storage, consumers) will rationalise the amount and/or cost of energy taken from the public grid. In the vast majority of cases, a significant reduction can be achieved, which, taking into account the domestic conditions and other costs added to the raw energy tariff, represents a monetisable result.

  • The controller can allocate available power between different resources and targets based on predefined logical decision situations. It can be used to target delegated loads - according to the most common industrial communication protocols - to comply with the committed network power limit, to protect them. With its support, the locality becomes an optimal ecosystem for energy management, the maintenance of which is the main task of control.

  • For industrial systems, in most cases it is critical that there is no feedback from either the PV or the storage system to the public grid. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in severe penalties, and in extreme cases, the point of use may be disconnected from the grid, with serious economic consequences, not to mention asset and operational security. The SELiEN energy storage control system monitors the currents flowing to and from the grid through meters with a high sampling frequency. If necessary, it can intervene with extremely fast intervention speed.

  • Peak shaving is one of the most widely used energy management strategies, which aims to reduce peak loads by optimising energy use and energy storage. The critical element of the process is storage capacity and proper control, with the system storing energy when the load on the electricity grid is lower and then using the stored energy during peak periods when consumption increases. This start-up strategy reduces the amount of power tied up and the associated costs, and can also replace the grid extension process that is often necessary.

  • Our control system is capable of communicating with external control systems, data centres, facility monitoring units via the most common industrial communication protocols and to execute their control requests locally, not only for energy storage, but also for gas engines, PV parks.

  • With spot-priced energy contracts, significant costs can be saved not only through high utilisation of renewable energy sources, but also through intra-day market speculation. When using this function, the control logic determines the best price period or periods available on a given day, at which time it draws energy from the grid to the battery in order to be able to serve internal consumption needs during peak periods, avoiding grid purchase. Where possible, electricity trading can also be activated, following the same logic.

Reliable, robust design for industrial use

Our hardware running the SELiEN control system is designed and built with nearly 20 years of experience in industrial control engineering. We wanted to create units that would never be a weak link in the system as a whole. We can always offer the right hardware option for your specific needs, in a variety of designs and with varying equipment levels to meet market requirements.

Compact design
Outdoor cabinet construction, complete with all sub-assemblies: controller PLC, router, switch, UPS, AC surge arrester, cabinet heating and ventilation. External mounting tabs allow quick installation directly into the immediate environment of the storage system.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
In the event of a power failure, it switches to the battery power source in the cabinet without loss of continuity. As the control unit remains operational, a clear fault indication is given to the monitoring system of the system failure caused by a mains problem, thus eliminating unnecessary false faults e.g. storage or control system failure. Typically, the standby time provided by the uninterruptible system is 8-12 hours.

Automatic 4G mobile internet switchover
In the event of an internet connection failure, the router in the cabinet can switch over to 4G mobile internet in 15s. It will then switch back to this primary source when the main network (Ethernet WAN) is stable. This feature is particularly useful in combination with the UPS function, as in most cases the Internet availability of a location is highly dependent on the availability of the power network.

Customisable hardware versions
We offer control systems with different hardware functionalities according to your installation needs, as shown in the following table. If required, it is also possible to provide directly only the PLC unit to which the actuator is connected, which is pre-configured with our software running on it.
